Transient

Transient reshapes hits instead of riding levels. Push Attack up for more stick and snap, down to soften a clicky hit; push Sustain up for more room and ring, down for a tight, dry sound. There is no threshold: quiet and loud hits get the same treatment, which is what makes a transient shaper different from a compressor.

Insert it inline on drums, percussion, or anything with clear hits. Wire audio into in and out onward. Move Attack and Sustain from zero in either direction and listen; Amount scales the whole effect for fine balance.

  • Input 0: in is the signal to shape. Mono, stereo, or multi-channel. Required.
  • Output 0: out emits the same shape as the input.
  • Attack: transient gain, -1 to +1. Positive exaggerates the hit, negative softens it.
  • Sustain: body and tail gain, -1 to +1. Positive brings up room and ring, negative tightens.
  • Amount: overall strength of the shaping.
  • Fastms and Slowms: the two detector time constants that define what counts as transient versus sustain.
  • Detect: detector law, peak or rms.
  • Link: process all channels with a shared detector so the stereo image does not wander.
  • Output: output trim, -24 to +24 dB.
  • Because there is no threshold, it works the same on a quiet verse and a loud chorus without adjustment.
  • Negative Sustain is a fast way to dry up a roomy drum recording; positive Attack plus negative Sustain is the tight, punchy setting.
  • Widen the gap between Fastms and Slowms if the detector splits hits and body poorly for your material.
